Huge thanks to St George’s, Weybridge

In 2019, St George’s Weybridge celebrates the 150th anniversary of the founding of the first Josephite school in Croydon in 1869. To celebrate this important date in the history of our schools and the vision of the Founder, Constant Van Crombrughe, a group of 17 staff are journeying out in October to visit three of our sister schools in Belgium. The group of staff will tour the schools and meet students and staff to establish new friendships and strengthen the bond that underpins the shared family ethos.

Following the school visits to College Visitation in La Berliere, St Jozefsinstituut in Geraardsbergen and College Paters Jozefieten in Melle, the group will cycle all the way back to St George’s College in Weybridge over a 5 day period, covering in the region of 200 miles. This journey symbolises the establishment of Josephite schools in the UK and later in the US and Democratic Republic of Congo in the latter part of the 19th century, following Van Crombrugghe’s death in 1869.

We hope that journeying in the ‘Footsteps of the Founder’ that we can raise money for two very important charities: St Joseph’s African Aid and Rainbows Bereavement. 75% of the money raised will go to SJAA, funding projects in the DR Congo to help build schools and provide the teachers with the resources they desperately need. Many teachers at St George’s already donate money to this charity to help pay the teachers’ salaries.

Rainbows is a very important charity as it supports children who have suffered bereavement, loss or who have need of counselling support due to family matters. Many Junior School children benefit from support sessions organised by staff, following training from the Rainbows Charity. 25% of the money raised from this charity event will go to Rainbows.
